Charitable Company Of The Week: Thankyou

Posted on: 24th March 2016

How's this for a unique non-profit? Thankyou is an Australian charitable company wholly dedicated to eliminating the effects of global poverty, born of the dire need for clean drinking water.

Thankyou Water was instigated in 2008 as a response to the global water crisis. At that time, over 900 million people had no access to safe drinking water on a regular basis. However, the Australian bottled water industry was worth roughly $600 million a year. Considering Australians can access safe drinking water straight from the tap, this seemed more than a little unfair!

One day, while pondering this injustice, co-founder Daniel Flynn sat down and asked himself, "What if purchasing a bottle of water here in Australia could help provide water for people in need?"

As such, Thankyou Water was born. The company rebranded in July 2013 as Thankyou, and introduced two new ranges; body care and food. They focus on a more holistic approach to eradicating poverty, with 100 per cent of profits funding safe water, food and hygiene and sanitation services around the globe.

The company draws its funding in three ways. Firstly, social investors offer low interest loans, which aids the capital costs required to generate the products Thankyou produces. As the company's structure is not designed to be driven by equity financing, this only works for those truly 'social' investors.

Secondly, at the beginning of a new business venture, Thankyou partners with 'match' donors. These donors give $1 for every dollar the business raises. As such, Thankyou can manage and sustain initial capital costs incurred by the business as they continue to meet their commitment to Project Partners.

Finally, 'angel' donors. These special people give to Thankyou directly, without tax deductions. Angel donors help fund high-risk, high-return new product launches, and new, original Thankyou marketing campaigns.

So, it's pretty obvious Thankyou is a more than worthy cause. However, the best thing about it is you can donate multiple ways! If you don't have oodles of money at your fingertips to make what you feel would be a worthwhile donation, simply make a habit of buying Thankyou products on the reg. After all, you only get out what you put in!
