5 Charitable Celebs We Love
We hear an awful lot about celebrities in the media. What movie they’re filming, what song they’ve released, even their latest partying escapades in Las Vegas get a look in. However, what we don’t often hear about is the incredible charity works so many of these celebs undertake. Here are five charitable celebs using their money and profiles to give back!
1. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift recently gave a fan the surprise of his life, by helping him to attempt to break his college’s charity record with a donation of $1,989 in honor of her album 1989. Igor Lekontsev, an accounting major who was raising money for HuskyTHON (his college’s annual dance marathon to raise money for the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center), received a FaceTime call from Taylor herself, relaying the good news. We’re guessing that was the icing on the cake!
2. Leonardo DiCaprio
It’s no secret Leo is a big advocate of protecting the environment. In 1998, he founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and the wilderness. The foundation wants to drastically scale up funding for the most effective conservation projects to protect oceans, land, and wildlife, while working directly to address climate change. He also supports numerous other charities including Feeding America, Global Cool, and Pediatric Epilepsy Project. You go, Leo!
3. Matt Damon
Matt Damon has long been a supporter of providing clean water to disadvantaged communities. Along with Gary White, he founded Water.org; a nonprofit company dedicated to providing access to clean water and sanitation to the developing world.
What makes the organization different is its WaterCredit Initiative. This provides new financing options for those living in poverty, allowing them to pay for a toilet in their homes, or connect them to an existing water supply. Matt’s dedication is so great, he actually did the legendary Ice Bucket Challenge with toilet water; letting the planet know toilet water in the Western world is actually cleaner than drinking water in the developing world. Now that’s a good man!
4. J.K Rowling
Author of the incredible Harry Potter series, J.K Rowling lost her billionaire status not by mismanagement; but because she gave so much money to charity. In 2011, she donated 16 per cent of her wealth to various causes. This is unsurprising; before her success, she was living off welfare, and unable to afford a typewriter, let alone a computer.
Some of the charities she supports are Comic Relief, The Maggie’s Centres for Cancer Care, the UK Labour Party, and Doctors Without Borders. She also founded the Children’s High Level Group (CHLG), also known as as Lumos. It works to end the institutionalization of children across Europe, and helps them find safer, more caring places to live.
5. Will Smith
Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith donate to charity through the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, which was established in 1996. Their main focus areas are education, racial equity and black causes, health, and religious outfits. Through their charity work, Will and Jada have streamed money to schools in the Los Angeles area such as Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, and Discovery Charter Prep School in Pacoima, CA.
They have also given to the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, ACLU of Southern California, Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, Society of Black Academic Surgeons, Little Miss African American, and the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance. Promoting equality is always a worthy cause!
