4 Reasons To Be More Charitable In 2016
With the New Year comes the necessary evil of New Year’s resolutions. Whether to get fit, get a promotion, save money, or a myriad of other goals, we all have something we want to achieve in 2016. So why not include a kind of ‘paying it forward’ initiative on your lucky list? There’s nothing more fulfilling than improving someone else’s life, even on a small scale. And hey, creating a bit of good karma always helps. Here are four reasons to be more charitable in 2016.
1. There are so many charities to support
With the state of the world as it is, it’s a relief to know there are a lot of people out there who are willing to do something about it. Charities are always running campaigns to better the lives of people around the world, but they need your help. Find a cause you’re passionate about, and research charities that support it. There’s always room for more love in the world!
2. It will make you happier
Yep; research shows doing things for other people, or giving to charity, actually makes you happier than receiving gifts or spending money on yourself. A professor at Harvard Business School, Michael Norton, conducted a study of 632 people, asking them about their level of income and what they spent their money on. He found no matter the income, those who spent money on others were much happier and more fulfilled than those who splurged on themselves. As they say, you only get out what you put in!
3. You’ll meet new people
Once you’ve found a cause you’re passionate about, you are going to meet lots of like-minded people. You’ll learn new things, experience different perspectives, and hear other people’s life experiences. Most importantly, you’ll make new friends, united by a common goal and a good cause. There’s everything to love about that!
4. You’ll do some good in the world
This is perhaps the most obvious reason to be more charitable in 2016. Not only will you make new friends and improve your mental state, you will really and truly make a positive difference in the world. So what are you waiting for? Get online or pick up the phone. It's a win-win situation!
